The Designathon is wrapped up, check out the wrap-up post with all the projects and winners. It was a lot of work, and I think it went really well overall, thanks to lots of people chipping in. And I have to say, the level of design sensitivity and output participants demonstrated in this event is higher than in other hackathons. So I do think the format works. I really enjoy the energy of seeing lots of people tinkering on things they are excited about. Well done, everyone.
The Bitcoin 2025 hackathon also wrapped up this week. The foundation sponsored a design track, so I’m also spending time this weekend reviewing those (thanks Jason and Erik for doing this together).
Now for a quick break with Holocat. I generated this one for Stacie to use on social media for Saving Satoshi. There will be another workshop at the Bitcoin Las Vegas conference next week. If you’re around… you know what to do.
For the Bitcoin Core App, another developer joined for the front-end work, and the pace is picking up. Which is great as we are getting closer to BTC Prague where we want to show off the wallet features.
The thing with the core app is that there is so much complexity to tame. The screen above may look very simple. But every element in this send flow has multiple different states due to the many configurations in which transactions can be made. From single- and multi-sig, one or more recipients, including fees in amounts, enabling fee bumping, sending the full balance, customizing fee rates, PSBT handling, to coin selection. And many of those have effects on each other. So you end up with quite a puzzle, where you want to ensure that different combinations of options still result in an easy-to-understand UI that matches what the user expects. I think we’re in a good state with all that. And implementation is probs going to happen in several iterations.
But let’s get to the main thing.
Oslo Freedom Forum starts tomorrow. Last year I was an attendee, this year I am helping organize a few things - Mo with activist interviews, and the White Noise and Dana Wallet teams with user testing. So it’s going to be quite a busy few days. I am so glad I am at a conference that stands for human rights, solidarity and democracy, and not the one that is happening Las Vegas right now that puts oligarchs and grifters on stage. Anyhow, let’s focus on things we can make positive contributions to.
So I am in the thick of a lot of events. It’s fun, it’s busy, it’s a lot sometimes. This will change end of June, and the time after will be more about executing several projects that are already in the waiting line.
Time for breakfast 🥐☕️🍎
